Thursday

6 p.m. – Dalí & Beyond Film Series: Fernando Perez’s Life Is to Whistle. Presented in conjunction with the Wifredo Lam in North America exhibit, Life Is to Whistle weaves a tale of mystical realism surrounding three characters in an allegory of life in Castro’s Cuba. (Cuba, 1998, Spanish with English subtitles, 106 min.; not rated, probably R.) Cost: Free with admission to the Salvador Dali Museum, which is only $5 after 5:00 p.m. every Thursday.

6 p.m. – Tampa Club/FMoPA dinner: Tampa & Mexico, a special relationship, with Charlie Miranda. Tampa City Councilman Miranda will speak on Mexico’s ties to Tampa; after dinner, join FMoPA director Joanne Milani for a tour of the museum’s current exhibit of photographs by Graciela Iturbide.

Friday

5-8 p.m. - Halloween Happy Hour hosted by the Crafty Hag with special guest Boogie Bead, 875 Fifth St. N., St. Petersburg. RSVP to 727-820-9227 or email coralette[at]craftyhag.com or boogiebead[at]yahoo.com.

5-9 p.m. - Meet the Natives reception with local artists at the Creative Native Gallery in East Tampa.

6-10 p.m. – ArtOberfest at the West Tampa Center for the Arts. German cuisine by Bailey’s of Hyde Park, appetizers by Noho Bistro, specialty beer and wines, artwork (of course!) and live music. $5. Proceeds benefit the West Tampa Council on Art, Culture and History.

7-10 p.m. – Opening reception and poetry reading for In Late Day Sun: Photographs and Poems of Florida Plant Life, a collaborative project featuring original photographs by Lori Ballard and poems by Gianna Russo, at Tre Amici at the Bunker. Reception includes live jazz composed for the show and performed by Sam Koppleman and Pamela Hill Epps. Free.

8-11 p.m. – Art After Dark at the Tampa Museum of Art, music by Projekt Nemesis and Ueberschall with an animated remake of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, costume party and display of local artists including Dr. Twistid, Irma Diaz, Mallari Mcmains, Spooky Steve and others. $10; free for members.

Saturday

10 a.m. – Free oil painting workshop at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center. Participants receive free art supplies from Winsor & Newton. RSVP to Julia[at]dfac[dot]org.

7:30 p.m. – Le Salon de Danse, a new dance series showcasing contemporary choreographers, featuring the work of Michael Foley at the Studio@620. $15 general admission, $10 students and senior. Rescheduled for 10/25 due to the ALCS game at the Trop.

Sunday

1-4 p.m. – Florida Highwaymen artist R.L. Lewis demo at Weedon Island Preserve. Free and open to the public. To register, please call 727-453-6500.

And a heads-up about an event taking place next Tuesday: the Dunedin Fine Arts Center’s de Mullet Party hosted by de Young & Restless.

Tuesday

6-8 p.m. – de Mullet Party, a night of mayhem, hosted by de Young & Restless at the Painted Fish Gallery, 350 Main Street, Dunedin. Enticements include free mullet hair stylings at Gregory’s Salon; work by Noah Deledda, Simon Boses and Christine Renc-Carter; “Got Mullet?” t-shirts; and free drinks for de Y&R members.
