Ybor Art Association on Media Talk

September 9th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Brad Cooper and Walter Romeo will appear on Media Talk this Thursday. (You can watch it live online, in person at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co. in Ybor, or online afterwards through Google video or YouTube.) They are working hard to revive the Ybor Art Walk. Looks like the next one will take place Sat., Oct. 4.

>>from Media Talk>>

Brad Cooper & Walter Romeo: Brad and Walter are art gallery owners in the Tampa Bay area. They have recently formed the Ybor Art Association. The new group kicked off September with a free art event that took visitors through historic Ybor City. By all accounts, the turnout was good. They will talk about how they hope to encourage the public to rediscover the rich art culture flourishing in Ybor.

This has been the downfall of art in Ybor…a feeble attempt to promote something that does not exist.

    Where is the art?
Romeo’s building has been empty and Cooper has nothing new that has not been around forever.
They list venues like..the gift shop at the Italian club.
Promoting something as sad as this makes Ybor look bad.
There are venues showing art in Ybor, but they have choosen not to participate in such a joke.
This is another farce by people who are trying to sell their buildings and get out of Ybor.

I can see where you’re coming from: I’ve only been once to the Ybor Art Walk, but some of the offerings were extremely disappointing. However, I plan to reserve judgment until I’ve been several times. Sometimes these things take 6 months or a year to attract interesting players.

I have nothing but respect for Brad Cooper, who I think mounts very good shows in a wonderful space. It is true, though, that his exhibits do not change very often. The premise of an art walk is that there’s something new to see each month.

Even St. Pete’s Second Saturday Art Walk lists venues like gift shops. The condition of promoting things that do not exist seems to be pandemic in the region (see, Tampa - City of the Arts).
