The arts are alive again in Ybor City– knock on wood.
This weekend, the historic district’s art galleries, museums (i.e., history and culture museums), studio spaces and other arts-related venues open their doors to the public from 12-6 p.m. with an inaugural First Saturday Art-Walk. “We would like to create a sustainable environment for the artists and galleries here,” says Brad Cooper, longtime gallery owner and one of the event’s masterminds. Pick up a map from Cooper’s 7th Ave gallery (next to Coyote Ugly) and stop by the Ybor Art Studio, Hoffman-Porges Gallery, Ybor Art Colony, Silver Meteor Gallery, Cigar Theater, Casa Lala and more.
First Saturday Art-Walk in Historic Ybor City, Sat., June 7, 12-6 p.m., various venues; for more information, call Brad Cooper Gallery at 813-248-6098.
I’d point you toward the group’s MySpace page, but there’s not really anything there yet. (For the love of god, will someone besides Tom please ask them to be friends?)

Hi my name is Melissa with the Ybor Art Studio
we have some new artists on display here and are hoping to see some good traffic this weekend, also I would like to know about meetings and how to be more involved with the Ybor Art Assoc. Please send me an email with some info.
Thank you
Melissa

as one of the artists participating at the newly remodeled ritz (a location with AC and a bar -which makes it a nice place to end the walk) I’d like to see the association work for more awareness. after leaving last time with my art in tow, I had people stopping me to ask what was going on and I passed out all my maps.
Also, some cohesive signing or simple banners marking the participating spaces would be great for those already in the know and might spark some interest for those just popping in to ybor for some shopping and food.
I suspect with the weather cooling down, the public might be more willing to the walk and hit some of those spots a little less comfortable in the warmer months. It just seems like a perfect time to get the word out and for the association to concentrate on making the walk visible once you’re down there.

That sounds like a good idea, Melissa Fair. I didn’t even realize that there were artists exhibiting inside the Ritz during the art walk…

i’ve just learned something rather disappointing…which is that the plan to continue maps and begin the process of making banners for the participating venues has been abandoned.
so, it seems like, without much of a chance or advertising/notice to the public of the artwalk, it’s going to slowly deteriorate. the making and distribution of maps and any communication to the public about the walk is now left to each venue.
this is just disappointing given the fact that there didn’t seem to be any cohesive effort among/between the venues and little to no information to the public in any form (i.e. print media, online, etc) aside from the few venues that promoted it of their own initiative. even the other local businesses were unaware there was anything going on…sometimes almost right next door to a venue or studio.
i’m not sure what can be done - but for a once a month event, it takes a bit of time and a lot of information for people to get it in their consciousness.
this is really sad on so many levels. i know a lot of the artists were/still are committed and understand that attendance will be low for awhile until the word gets out.
not sure what will happen in the long run…but if anyone reading this tells a few people about the next walk, it will help boost attendance and traffic around the spaces, galleries and studios, especially those off of 7th ave.

You might try contacting some of the local art clubs. They would publicize it in their on line web sites, news letters etc. I didn’t see the date or time for the art walk.

There will be an art crawl in Ybor the beginning of the month of Nov organized by one of theTampa art clubs. They could help publisize your event if you contacted them. Tampa Realistic Artist and the Brandon Art Leaque.
