A sculpture-drawing by Elliott Hundley at the New Museum.
Art Squeeze is on a vacation of sorts this week in New York, where the goal is to see as much art stuff– fairs including the Armory Show, Pulse, Scope, Volta, Bridge and Diva; and exhibits including the Whitney Biennial, Courbet at the Met, Design and the Elastic Mind at MoMA and Ghada Amer at the Brooklyn Museum of Art– as humanly possible.
Can it all be done? Actually, according to a grid I’ve made on a dog-eared notepad, it can’t. But, dammit, I’ll go down trying.
Unlike at Miami Basel, there aren’t too many reports of locals up here that I can bring you, with the notable exception of Greene Contemporary, which has a booth at the Bridge Art Fair. (It’s on the grid for tomorrow, which is designated “Chelsea day.”) Last week, Creative Loafing Sarasota devoted its cover to owner Jonathan Greene, who plans to leave Sarasota and set up shop in New York later this year, and other local gallery owners and activists commenting on the struggling Sarasota arts scene. Their comments will no doubt ring familiar to Tampa and St. Petersburg residents.
Yesterday, I visited the New Museum’s very sexy new building on the Lower East Side. (The interior, a vertical stack of box-like galleries, reminded me a little bit of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Outside, a perforated metal skin– not unlike what is expected to clad the new Tampa Museum of Art– and a flirty sculpture-sign that says “Hell, Yes!” in rainbow letters make a it fun addition to the Bowery.) Above, an iPhone shot of one of my favorite pieces– by Elliott Hundley– from the exhibit currently on view, Unmonumental.
The piece is part of Unmonumental’s sculptural assemblage component, but it reminded me of Drawing Beyond the Plane, the exhibit currently on view at the Tampa Museum of Art. “Drawing” is a little gem of a show, so if you’re in the mood for something smart and zingy in the Bay area over the weekend, I recommend checking it out. Or go see Rediviva at Flight 19, a project that is definitely in dialog with the work on view at Unmonumental.
Weekend Round-Up will return next week with a slew of things to see in Ybor and a new show from Creative Clay. In the meantime, stay tuned for a uploads from New York (if you’re into that kind of thing) and don’t forget to check out Sensory Overload tomorrow night.
