Saturday Morning Art Market

March 16th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Bi-polar bunnies by Coralette Damme, a.k.a. the Crafty Hag, at Saturday Morning Art Market.

In addition to the largely food-based Saturday Morning Market (where you can buy assorted herbs, plants, soap, batiked garments, etc., as well as fruits, veggies, prepared foods, baked goods, and so on), downtown St. Petersburg now hosts the Saturday Morning Art Market each week.

The market takes place in Williams Park, where a couple dozen artists and craftspeople gather under the shade of trees and tents to hawk their wares, from paintings and collages to bi-polar bunnies (happy on one side, sad/pissed on the other; whee!), cigar box purses covered with stamps, digitally manipulated photographs and silk-screened t-shirts. The offerings are a mixed bag, but it’s worth searching for the handful of diamonds in the rough.

St. Petersburg City Council member (and owner of Interior Motives) Leslie Curran started the park as a means of revitalizing Williams Park, a hangout for the city’s homeless population. Interior Motives employee Jessica Dwyer has since taken it under her wing. (If you are interested in joining the market, call the gallery and ask for Jessica.)

The market is scheduled to continue on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. until late April or May.

Hey! I just bought one of those bipolar bunnies at the Dinosaur World craft fair on Sunday. I hope the downtown art market becomes gigantic.
